Overview

Uttar Pradesh launched the Nand Baba Dugdh Mission in June 2023 with a budget of ₹1,000 crore. The mission runs through four sub-schemes, each sized for a different farmer: Mukhyamantri Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana (2 indigenous cows, ₹80,000 subsidy), Mini Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana (5 cows), Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana (10 cows) and Mukhyamantri Pragatisheel Pashupalak Protsahan Yojana (25 cows, subsidy up to ₹31.25 lakh). In every sub-scheme the government covers 40% of the unit cost and pays it through Direct Benefit Transfer.

The mission is built around indigenous breeds — Sahiwal, Gir, Tharparkar, Haryana, Gangatiri — and its stated purpose is as much about reviving desi cow genetics and strengthening the rural dairy economy as about milk output. Training in animal husbandry, feed management and clean-milk production is part of the package. At least 50% of beneficiary seats in some sub-schemes are reserved for women, and small and marginal farmers get priority. The official portal at nandbabadugdhmission.up.gov.in handles applications and tracking.

What you get

The benefit as the state notifies it — nothing here is an estimate.

  • 40% of the dairy-unit cost as a non-refundable government subsidy, paid directly to the bank account via DBT.
  • Scales from a 2-cow household unit (₹80,000 subsidy) to a 25-cow commercial farm (up to ₹31.25 lakh).
  • Covers cattle purchase, shed construction, equipment and initial feed — not just animals.
  • Training in animal husbandry, clean-milk production and feed management included.
  • At least 50% beneficiary seats reserved for women in select sub-schemes.

Who is eligible

State schemes usually state their criteria as prose rather than a checklist. This is that prose, unpacked — the department’s verification is what decides.

You qualify if

  • Permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh
  • Small, marginal or landless farmer, or a rural dairy entrepreneur
  • Must rear indigenous breeds (Sahiwal, Gir, Tharparkar, Haryana, Gangatiri)
  • Bank account linked to Aadhaar for DBT
  • Women applicants and SC/ST candidates get preference

Not covered

  • Crossbreed or exotic cattle — the mission is exclusively for indigenous breeds
  • Applicants already receiving subsidy under another central or state dairy scheme for the same unit

Documents you need

Have these ready before you start — most rejections are a missing paper, not a missing right.

  • Aadhaar card
  • Bank passbook (Aadhaar-linked)
  • Land or premises proof for the shed
  • Cattle purchase plan or quotation
  • Caste certificate (for SC/ST priority)
  • Training certificate from a recognised dairy or animal husbandry institution, if available

How to apply

Fewer steps than a central scheme, and usually one office rather than a portal.

  1. 1

    Register on the mission portal

Visit nandbabadugdhmission.up.gov.in, create an account and choose the sub-scheme that matches your planned unit size.

  2. 2

Fill the application and upload documents

Enter land/premises details, cattle breed preference and bank account. Upload Aadhaar, passbook and shed proof.

  3. 3

    Verification and selection

The District Dairy Development Officer verifies documents and premises. A selection list is prepared and published on the portal.

  4. 4

Set up the unit and receive subsidy

After selection, purchase the cattle and set up the shed. On field verification, the 40% subsidy is credited directly to your bank account via DBT.

If something goes wrong

Missing from the list, or payment stuck — here is the channel the department itself publishes for it.

  • For application status, rejection queries or a delayed subsidy transfer, contact the District Dairy Development Officer at the district headquarters. Keep the application ID from the portal handy.
  • Beyond the department, use the UP Jansunwai portal — jansunwai.up.nic.in — or the CM Helpline toll-free 1076 to register the grievance formally. Track the complaint through the portal reference number.

Frequently asked questions

Which cow breeds qualify under this mission?

Only indigenous breeds — Sahiwal, Gir, Tharparkar, Haryana, Gangatiri and other recognised desi breeds. Crossbreed or exotic cattle like HF or Jersey do not qualify.

What is the smallest unit I can start with?

Two indigenous cows under the Mukhyamantri Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana sub-scheme. The government covers 40% of the roughly ₹2 lakh unit cost, so your subsidy is about ₹80,000.

Is the subsidy a loan or a grant?

It is a non-refundable grant — 40% of the unit cost, paid directly to your bank account via DBT. You do not repay it.

Can women apply?

Yes, and they get preference. At least 50% of beneficiary seats in select sub-schemes are reserved for women.

Do I need to already own cattle to apply?

No. You apply with a purchase plan. The cattle are bought after your application is selected and verified.

Can I combine this with a Kisan Credit Card loan?

Yes. KCC provides working-capital credit for feed and veterinary costs; this mission covers the setup subsidy. They address different expenses.

Is training mandatory?

The mission includes training in animal husbandry and clean-milk production. Having a training certificate from a recognised institution improves your selection chances, though it is not a hard rejection criterion in every sub-scheme.
