Wood Ash: Free Potash — Used Carefully

Wood ash from a clean fire is a free source of potash and calcium, a leaf dust against soft-bodied pests, and a grain-storage protectant. But it raises soil pH, so it helps acid soils and harms alkaline ones. Here is how to use it — and where not to.

Every clean cooking or crop-residue fire leaves behind a genuinely useful input: wood ash. It is a free source of potash and calcium, a leaf dust against soft-bodied pests, and a traditional grain-storage protectant. The catch is its alkalinity — wood ash raises soil pH, which makes it a gift to acid soils and a mistake on alkaline ones. Everything about using it well comes down to that one fact. The potash is the headline. It also carries lime value, which is exactly why it shifts pH.

Three ways it is used

  • As a potash source. Worked lightly into acidic soil, it feeds potassium-hungry crops and nudges the pH toward neutral.
  • As a leaf dust. Dusted on leaves, it deters soft-bodied pests and slugs and adds a little potash by the way. It must stay dry to keep working.
  • In grain storage. Layered or mixed through stored grain and pulses, it is a traditional protectant against storage insects.

Where not to use it

  • Alkaline or saline soils. Ash pushes an already-high pH higher and can lock up nutrients — avoid it here.
  • Around acid-loving crops. Anything that wants an acidic root zone will not thank you for it.
  • Heavy applications. It is concentrated; a light dressing is right, a heap is not.
  • Dirty ash. Only clean, untreated wood or crop residue — never painted or treated timber, coal or rubbish, which leave toxic residues behind.

What it is good and bad at

Good at: free potash and lime for acid soils, a dry dust against soft pests, and grain protection — genuine value from a waste product.

Frequently asked questions

Is wood ash good for the soil?

On acidic soils, yes — it supplies potash and calcium and gently raises pH toward neutral. On already-alkaline or saline soils it does more harm than good, because it pushes the pH higher still. Always match it to your soil, and apply modestly.

How much wood ash can I apply?

Sparingly — a light dressing worked into the soil, not heaped on. Because it is alkaline and concentrated in potassium, over-application skews soil chemistry and can lock up other nutrients. Spread it thin and observe, rather than treating it like a bulk fertiliser.

Does wood ash control pests?

Dusted lightly on leaves it deters some soft-bodied pests and slugs, and it is a traditional protectant dusted through stored grain and pulses against storage insects. It is a mild, supporting measure, best kept dry to keep working.
