About this variety
H-165 is a hybrid between two local cassava cultivars, long established as one of the two dominant varieties in the industrial cassava belt of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It bears relatively short, conical roots and carries high starch content, which is what makes it valuable to the starch and sago (sabudana) mills that are the crop's main buyers in that belt. Its ten-to-eleven-month duration is much longer than Kerala's table varieties, so it is chosen specifically where the land can be tied up that long in exchange for a heavier, higher-value industrial harvest.
