Sree Vijaya is a short-duration clonal selection from ICAR-CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram, bred specifically to fit into the roughly six-month window available between paddy crops on the low-lying land common in southern and central Kerala. Its tubers have a brown skin and a purple rind, and the variety is grown for direct table use rather than industrial starch extraction. Because it matures so much faster than the industrial hybrids of Tamil Nadu, it lets a grower fit tapioca into a tighter rotation with the main paddy crop rather than tying up the land for the better part of a year.
