Young green maize seedlings growing in rows with dark soil visible between the plants

The maize whorl looks fine from the outside. Then one morning the leaves unroll to show ragged holes, wet frass packed into the funnel, and a fat caterpillar sitting inside тАФ eating the growing point of the plant.

That is the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). It arrived in Karnataka in 2018, and within two seasons it was in every maize-growing state. Today it is established across India and has been recorded on bajra, jowar, paddy, sugarcane, cotton, ginger, and even banana тАФ over 80 host crops in total.

The damage estimate: crop losses worth more than Rs 29,000 crore annually from pests across Indian agriculture, and fall armyworm is now among the top contributors in kharif cereals.

Know what you are looking at

Identification matters because the wrong diagnosis leads to the wrong spray. Here is how to tell fall armyworm apart from the common stem borer:

Head: A clear inverted Y-shaped white mark running down the front of the head capsule. No other common caterpillar in Indian maize has this marking.

Body: Four raised black spots arranged in a square pattern on the 8th and 9th abdominal segments. Run your finger тАФ you can feel the bumps.

Colour: Young larvae are light green. As they grow, they darken to brown or nearly black. Full-grown larvae reach 3тАУ4 cm.

Eggs: The moth lays 120тАУ150 eggs in a mass, covered with a felt-like layer of scales. Check the undersides of lower leaves. One female can lay up to 1,000 eggs in her lifetime.

The moth: Male moths have a brown forewing with a triangular white spot near the tip. Females are duller, greyish-brown.

How the damage happens

Fall armyworm feeds day and night, but is most active after dark. The destruction follows a sequence:

  1. Leaf scraping тАФ newly hatched larvae scrape the leaf surface, leaving a translucent window
  2. Whorl feeding тАФ as they grow, larvae move into the central whorl and feed from the inside out, producing masses of wet frass
  3. Growing point damage тАФ heavy feeding kills the growing tip, and the plant either dies or throws stunted side shoots
  4. Cob boring тАФ in late infestations the larvae bore directly into the developing cob, causing grain loss and opening the door for fungal rots

On maize, losses of 30тАУ50% are common in unmanaged fields. On bajra and jowar, the earhead damage can be equally severe.

Step-by-step IPM that works

No single method stops fall armyworm alone. The approach that government research stations have tested and validated uses layers тАФ cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical тАФ timed to the crop stage.

Before sowing

  • Neem cake at 250 kg/ha during the last ploughing тАФ this suppresses pupae in the soil from the previous season
  • Seed treatment: Cyantraniliprole 19.8% + thiamethoxam 19.8% FS at 4 ml/kg seed protects seedlings for the first 15тАУ20 days
  • Border cropping: Plant 3 rows of cowpea, sunflower, or fodder sorghum around the maize field тАФ these act as trap crops and attract natural enemies

Early whorl stage (15тАУ25 days after emergence)

This is the highest-return window for intervention.

  • Set pheromone traps тАФ 12 traps per hectare. These monitor moth arrival and also reduce the mating population. Check traps every 3 days and replace lures every 3 weeks.
  • Spray azadirachtin 1500 ppm (neem-based) as the first-line treatment if you see early leaf-scraping damage
  • If larval counts exceed 1тАУ2 per plant, move to chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC at 0.4 ml/litre or emamectin benzoate 5% SG at 0.4 g/litre

Late whorl stage (35тАУ45 days)

Larvae are larger now and harder to reach inside the whorl. Options at this stage:

  • Spinetoram 11.7% SC at 0.5 ml/litre тАФ effective on larger larvae
  • Novaluron 5.25% + emamectin benzoate 0.9% SC at 2 ml/litre тАФ a combination that has shown strong results in Indian field trials
  • Metarhizium anisopliae (a biological fungus-based agent) can be applied if you prefer a biological route and the infestation is moderate

Spray timing matters

Spray in the evening, not during morning heat. Fall armyworm larvae are most active and most exposed after sundown. Direct the nozzle into the whorl тАФ a spray that lands only on outer leaves misses the target entirely.

Rotation strategy

Research from Indian field trials shows that rotating active ingredients across spray rounds works best:

  • Round 1 (20 days): emamectin benzoate 5 SG at 0.2 g/litre
  • Round 2 (30 days): chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC at 0.2 ml/litre
  • Round 3 (45 days): spinetoram 11.7 SC at 0.5 ml/litre

This rotation avoids resistance build-up and gave the best larval reduction and yield protection in multi-season studies.

Natural enemies already in your field

Do not spray broad-spectrum insecticides like pyrethroids unless there is no other option. They kill the very predators that keep fall armyworm numbers down:

  • Trichogramma egg parasitoids тАФ tiny wasps that lay their eggs inside FAW egg masses
  • Telenomus remus тАФ another egg parasitoid, highly specific to Spodoptera
  • Earwigs, ladybird beetles, ground beetles тАФ generalist predators that eat young larvae at night
  • Birds тАФ mynahs, drongos, and egrets pick larvae from the whorl during morning feeding

If you are using pheromone traps and neem sprays as your first line, these natural enemies get the space to work.

Lifecycle тАФ why timing is everything

Understanding the fall armyworm lifecycle explains why early action matters and late action fails.

Egg stage (2тАУ3 days): The moth lays egg masses on the underside of lower leaves, often on the first 3тАУ4 leaves of the plant. Each mass holds 120тАУ150 eggs covered with a felt-like protective layer. This is the easiest stage to destroy тАФ a single egg mass killed now prevents 100+ larvae.

Larval stage (14тАУ21 days): This is the feeding and destruction stage. There are 6 larval instars (growth stages). The first 3 instars cause leaf scraping тАФ they eat the surface tissue, leaving translucent "windows" on the leaves. Instars 4тАУ6 cause the real damage тАФ boring into the whorl, eating the growing point, and eventually entering the cob. A single mature larva eats roughly 4тАУ5 cm of leaf per day.

Pupal stage (8тАУ10 days): The full-grown larva drops to the ground and pupates in the soil at 2тАУ5 cm depth. This is why neem cake at ploughing works тАФ it kills pupae in the soil from the previous season.

Adult moth (7тАУ14 days): Female moths are strong flyers and can cover 100+ km in a single night on wind currents. This is how fall armyworm spreads so rapidly from one district to the next. A single female lays 1,000тАУ1,500 eggs over her lifetime.

Total cycle: about 30тАУ45 days. In warm Indian conditions, 4тАУ6 generations can occur in a single kharif season. Each generation multiplies the population dramatically if left unchecked.

When it jumps between crops

Fall armyworm does not stay in maize alone. Farmers who grow maize alongside bajra, jowar, or sugarcane report the pest moving from one crop to another as the first crop matures or dries up. In recent years, it has been increasingly recorded on paddy in southern and eastern India тАФ a serious concern given paddy's importance as a staple.

Monitor all cereal and grass-family crops in the field and on the borders. If you see damage on maize, check neighbouring bajra and jowar plots immediately.

Vegetable crops are generally not primary hosts, but under heavy population pressure, fall armyworm has been recorded feeding on onion, cabbage, and even capsicum. These are secondary hosts тАФ the pest may feed on them but does not build large populations.

The real cost of doing nothing

A maize field with unchecked fall armyworm loses 30тАУ50% of its grain. At Rs 2,090/quintal MSP (Kharif 2025тАУ26), that is Rs 6,000тАУ10,000 per acre lost тАФ far more than the Rs 800тАУ1,200 cost of two targeted sprays and 12 pheromone traps.

The investment in early detection and the first spray is the single highest-return spend in the crop.

Checklist for this season

  • Check lower leaf undersides for egg masses from 7 days after emergence
  • Set 12 pheromone traps/ha at sowing
  • First spray (neem or chlorantraniliprole) at first sign of leaf scraping
  • Second spray (emamectin or spinetoram) at late whorl if needed
  • Rotate active ingredients тАФ never spray the same molecule twice in a row
  • Avoid pyrethroids if possible тАФ they destroy natural enemies
  • Direct the spray nozzle into the whorl, not on outer leaves
  • Report heavy infestations to your block agriculture officer or nearest KVK
